Moisiu: The elections of 20 January; expressed his regret for the disagreements between the political parties
I invite the Albanian citizens to use their vote on 20 January 2007. This was the declaration of Alfred Moisiu that chose the dilemma about the election date
In a press conference the president Moisiu has criticized the political parties for not being able to arrive to a consensus on one of the most important things such as the Elections Reform that has been considered as a doos to the integration of the country. Mr. Moisiu said that “As the Head of the state express my annoyance for this unacceptable state of things. Free, honest and democratic elections are of a great importance for Albania and its euroatlantic future.”
He continued with the political process followed by him for the realization of democratic reforms for the local elections. “In November of 2005, only 100 days after general elections I invited the political parties for the elections reform and they would immediately start the work for the creation of the reform commission and for the preparing of free, honest and democratic elections in Albania. As it is already known they did not fulfill their promises and the reforms were delayed by a year.
In November 2006 I called a second meeting of parliamental parties with the aim of consultations for the election date and the beginning of election reforms. I publicly declared that if the political parties would not agree I would respect the legal term for the elections.
Without sharing the responsibilities of each party I say that the promises for free and honest elections do not respond to the reality . In this context the political parties have no right to deny the citizens the constitutional right of confidential vote and elections. They should immediately give up their reciprocal disagreements and fulfill their promises given in agreement with the president, the international factor or between themselves.,” did he say criticizing the political parties who have remained distant to the national unity and interests.
