Uganda Football Chief Is Suspended

The Chief Executive Officer of the Uganda Football Federation (FUFA), Charles Mazembe, has been suspended to allow for a full investigation that he abused his office.
Earlier reports had suggested that Mazembe was suspended because he announced on radio that Uganda had advanced to the third round of the qualifying tournament of the 2010 World Cup after they beat Benin 2-1 in their final group match.

He was soon proved wrong as Uganda finished third according to FIFA and so failed to make it to the next round of the competition.

"He did not have an answer on the issue of going on the radio and misinforming the public, and he was only cautioned to clearly read the documentation at hand before he makes any statements," said FUFA spokesman Rogers Mulindwa.

"The suspension is about the letter he wrote to the embassy recommending one Eddy Migadde for a visa.

"If he is innocent, he will come back to office. If he is guilty, the appropriate action will be taken," Mulindwa added.

The FUFA CEO has been in office since 2000.

He was a top FIFA referee who handled the final of the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations between host South Africa and Tunisia.
