Berisha invites the political class to contribute in the achievement of the NATO membership standards
Premier Sali Berisha, emphasized the neccessityof efforts from all the political forces in order to lead the country towards NATO membership. As a participant in the workshop on the issues of Defenseand Security, organised by the USA Embassy in Tirana,
the primeminister stated that"NATO membership remains the most major objective of
teh Government and our foreign policy". He asked all political forces to give their
contribution on this matter, which according to him is a nationwide issue. He made sure thet the Government will undertake all efforts in thisdirection, by implementing free
elections, zero tolerance war against the organised crime, corruption, the consolidation of the legal state, so that our country will deserve the invitationfor becoming a member in the Alliance, in the next Summit, in 2008, wchich will be the year of expandingwith new members. "The Defense budget will reach 2percent of the GDP from 2008 or two years earlier than the plan foreseen in our objectives", said Mr.Berisha.During his speech the Primeminister also evaluated the contribution of teh peacekeeping missions of the AF in the world, he expressed the commitment in increasing the number of peacekeepers in those regionswhere our allies will need our assistance. The head of the Government also thanked the United States of America, President Bush,the american DefenseSecretary, for the priority that they give to the cooperation with Albania, especially in teh field of defense and security, as well as for the unlimited assistance and the continuous support that they areextending to Albania on its NATO integration proccess. /// start///
