Kandidati demokrat, John Edwards hoqi dore dje nga gara presidenciale, nderkohe qe republikani Mitt Romney paralajmeroi se do te vazhdonte perballe fituesit te ri te asamblese zgjedhore ne Karolinen e Jugut, John McCain. Edwards, ish-senator i Karolines se Veriut, asnjehere nuk mundi te rivalizoje dy figurat kryesore te demokrateve, Hillary Clinton dhe Barack Obama. Vendimi i tij ngushton hapesirat mes Clintonit dhe Obames ne prag te zgjedhjeve te 5 shkurtit ne 24 shtete, qe eshte quajtur ndryshe edhe ''super e marta''.
